Warm Mix Asphalt is one of the hottest topics today in infrastructure needs. WMA is what they are calling the new "GREEN" Asphalt. Looking for the best practice in road construction today the needs of its environmental impact needs to be high on the asphalt producer's priority list.Whitaker Contracting is harnessing today's needs with the service they provide. The new "green" asphalt is not about color, it is the same dark asphalt as on many of our roads today. Introducing Warm Mix Asphalt as a environmentally- friendly asphalt here in Northern Alabama creates opportunity to increase community awareness, bridge the gaps in steps taken by our Government agencies to enhance their communities with environmental benefits and be not only a Asphalt Producer in your community but to be a good neighbor. Whitaker Contracting has added to their plants the Double Barrel Green System. This system uses water to produce Warm Mix Asphalt by injecting foamed water into the mix along with liquid asphalt cement. The injection of water causes the liquid asphalt to foam and expand in volume. The foaming action helps the liquid asphalt coat the aggregate at a lower temperature. Whitaker Contracting has found the benefits of using the Double Barrel Green System to be: - No smoke and no smell because the light oils in liquid asphalt never reach the boiling point. - The ability to run high percentages of recycled mix with standard grade asphalt. Finding show recycled RAP from even a deteriorating road still performs as well as the asphalt did when it was originally paved, had compaction and was in specs. Nothing has changed with the quality, strength, performance and ability to have compaction. Recycled asphalt is the same as virgin except one is black in color and one is grey or white. With 70 million metric tons of asphalt being recycled each year, asphalt is America's most recycled resource. - About 14% less fuel is used corresponding to a 14% increase in production (greater temperature reductions result in bigger fuel savings). The lower temperatures allow us to offer these benefits: - 60% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. - Up to 75% reduction in photochemical smog emissions. - Nearly 80% drop in sulfur dioxide. - A 55% savings in energy - Improved worker safety. - Reopening roads quickly because of the cooler temperatures after placement and compaction is complete. - Longer paving season due to the fact WMA works well in cooler weather. Over all WMA cost about the same, takes about the same amount of time to put down and that dark color they are finding last longer.
